Aart Mental disciplines used to prevent the emergence of avatars or combat the effects of the babbler.
Abbadon Destructive or negative energy; the black ally.
Abzulim First race of immortals, formed from the earliest terrestrial creatures; now extinct.
Adoil Name given to the crucible.
Ally One of the three basic forms of energy; creation, destruction or change.
Ambiance Quality of an area where immaculum is freely released and the power of religarum is reduced.
Ancien Regime Immortals who have never entered Lethe.
Apocrypha Society of humans dedicated to the extinction of immortals from the Habitat, may be trained as a nexus or prodigy.
Aria The "voice of creation", the ether serenade of the crucible.
Attention Simple manipulation of existence, mimicking a process of the crucible.
Audience Humans who know of the existence of immortals.
Avatar Persona created by Lethe; stored in the vox.
Babbler Confusion of the mind caused by the combined effects of ennui, avatars, conundrum, memory and experiences.
Bad Spill Spill of immaculum which contains taint or religarum.
The Ban Magdalen curse which forbids lullaby and forces the immortal to sin.
Believers Humans who willingly assist immortals, usually members of a Quiet culture.
Benendanti Apocrypha turncoats, now a Banjax Quiet culture.
Bete Noire Animals controlled by the Sanguinary.
Blazon A Pride’s heraldic device.
Blue Air Dimension with no physical existence, a realm of spirit bordering the Habitat.
Breed Immortals grouped by general type; drove, outlander, primal, solitaire, profane, natural, etc.
Cadre Group of immortals who work together.
Cage Attention combined with an ally.
Calling Purpose within the Stratagem; second layer of allegiance.
Cardinal Primary presence in the mind, the most recent persona.
Chimera Immortal with multiple himsati forms; the offspring of two Madonna. Profane and easily controlled by the Sanguinary.
Chorus Two or more immortals joined in serenade.
Clash Melee combat where close proximity of halos negates panacea.
Conundrum Crystalline reeds, strands or shards; the shattered physical form of the Sanguinary.
Convictions Thirteen tenants; each pride has a policy for each; to break conviction is to face personal loss of visage and possible censure.
Core Shards Conundrum used in the Sanguinary’s manifestation attempts – the Red Shard, the Malice Shard, the Incubus, and the Sheba Shard.
Creche Capitol of a Pride’s primary mantle, their main stronghold.
Crossing Passage into the Blue Air; generally occurs upon physical death.
Crucible Center of the universe, the source of all.
D’arcade Group of unaligned, profane immortals who specialize in trade of goods, lore, passage, etc.
Darkle Abbadon manifesting itself in taint.
Demeter Reverent term for Earth, part of the Habitat.
Dominions Realms beyond the Maelstrom, ravaged by the Shouting War, where immaculum is scarce.
Dream Travel through the Morpheum.
Drove Immortal working for the Sanguinary; often insane.
Dynasties Groups within a pride which support the Paragon.
Echo Serenade which directly targets a halo.
Eidos Perfection of existence and understanding.
Emim Immortals mentally and physically warped by the Lash; often vampiric in nature, stealing immaculum.
Ennead Division of the Jury responsible for tallying Pride visage.
Ennui Disconnection from the body, an unaware state; often caused by the weight of experience or an emerging avatar.
Esoteric Immortal with the himsati of a mythological creature, usually the child of a Madonna and an immortal, or an immortal with a modified himsati.
Ether Creation energy; the white ally.
Exodus Period starting in 1666 when hundreds of immortals entered Lethe.
Femme Darkle Core of conundrum and target of next Sanguinary incarnation.
Firmament Chaotic land mass surrounding the Maelstrom; source of Primals.
Flood Flow of immaculum from the crucible.
Gifted Humans who have been given extra immaculum by an immortal.
Glamour The localized ripple-like feel of an immortal changing to or from himsati form.
Glyph Inscription which negates panacea when placed on a ranged weapon; from Abzulim lore.
Gossamer Immortal in the Blue Air with no physical form.
Habitat Dimension of the twilights.
Halo Energy which is part of all things; often interpreted as a range of colors.
Himsati Immortal’s original and true form.
The Hunt Slayers seeking to destroy an immortal who broke pandect.
Hush-Hush Sanguinary’s lair within the Morpheum.
Immaculum Raw life force, prime force of energy in the universe.
Immortal Celebrant The primary member of the Jury.
Ingenue Immortal still emerging from Lethe.
The Jury Most powerful of immortals, above the Stratagem; responsible for enforcing its rules, deciding coups and visage.
The Lash Disease of immaculum accidentally created during the Shouting War by heavy use of serenades. Victims are violently insane and feral, torn by impulses beyond their comprehension.
Legacies Attentions taught to immaculum-gifted twilights by immortals.
Lethe Process of submerging consciousness, storing the mind in a vox, creating a new persona, and attaining physical rebirth.
Ley Membrane Energy barrier between the crucible and all else.
Litany Mental training focus used to learn a new attention, often associated with key words and phrases that trigger corresponding memories.
Looker Humans who can identify immortals on sight.
Lull An area which has been warded against certain forms of serenades.
Madonna Immortal who can bear immortal children, sacred to all Prides. Their offspring are more susceptible to Sanguinary control.
Maelstrom Dimension, realm of chaos near the crucible.
Maestro Immortal directing a chorus.
[Madonna’s] Heir Derogatory title of the offspring of a Madonna and an immortal.
Manes Twilights which have been completely possessed by the Sanguinary.
Manitou Offspring of a human and a primal.
Mantle Realm created by a tryst for immortal use, linked to a dimension.
Meld Combination of two or more attentions.
Morpheum Dream realm created by the collective unconscious of twilights.
Mote Quantity of immaculum.
Motif A theory of existence within the perpetual society; compare to religion.
Nadir Energy web between the realms; mostly disconnected from the Habitat.
Namtar Another name for the Lash.
Naturals Immortals created in the beginning with an animal Himsati; not born of a Madonna.
Neverness Nothingness or heaven, theorized by immortals.
Nexus Human trained to channel religarum against immortals by focusing self or group belief.
Nightmare Immortal sleeper who kills twilights in the Morpheum.
Orenda Energy responsible for change; the gray ally.
Outlanders Immortals who never enter the Habitat because their vast halo causes loud ripples.
Panacea Ability to regenerate wounds not caused during halo clash.
Pandect Laws upheld by all immortals, enforced by most profane but primarily by stratagem Prides.
Pantheon Group of scions and their savant.
Paragon The leader of a Pride.
Peer Rank Station within a calling, indicated by livery color ranging from white to black; leads to the phrase "advance the cardinal".
Perpetual Society All immortals, trysts, and Quiet cultures.
Poison Substance which damages an immortal without halo clash and is not healed by panacea.
Pride Group of immortals, originally divided by species but now by political faction; first layer of allegiance.
Primal An immortal formed from an element, energy, or plant rather than an animal. Considered profane until the Peri joined the Perpetual society.
Prodigy Human trained to use free immaculum for simple attentions; very rare.
Profane Immortals who exist outside the Stratagem.
Quiet Culture An organized group of twilights (or other non-immortal entities) under the patronage of a Pride. They are often created as sources of rialla and retainers, or to preserve a culture.
Rapture Sensation felt through all conundrum when the Sanguinary attempts to manifest physically.
Relics Items created by serenade and used in the Shouting War.
Religarum Bias on immaculum caused by superstition, religion or belief which causes taboo.
Reverie Disconnected mental state akin to dreaming, where the immortal relives memories of current or past persona.
Rialla Event which causes twilights to release small quantities of immaculum freely.
Ripple Energy wave caused by free immaculum, use of serenades, taint, etc.
Rook Member of a Pride with no calling, but not outside the Stratagem.
Runegun Apocrypha firearm which can use Glyph bullets. These bullets negate Panacea.
The Sanguinary Entity from the crucible that seeks to restore its own form by cannibalizing the conundrum of all immortals.
Savant Immortal who controls scions and can transfer consciousness into them; how Outlanders visit the Habitat.
Scepter Pride Pride with the most visage, thus with the right to lead the others.
Schism Mental fight for control of the body between avatars or the cardinal persona and an avatar.
Scion Ephemeral being created by an immortal to splinter off a taboo; can be taken over by their savant.
Secret Serenade known only to one Pride.
Serenade Use of the vox and free immaculum to create an attention, warp, echo, carnal, cage, meld or chorus.
Shallows Areas where the border between the Blue Air and the Habitat is thin.
Sheol In the Dominions, the original home of the Sanguinary; near the firmament.
Shouting War Period of open combat between immortals which virtually destroyed the Dominions and gave birth to the Lash. At the end of the war, the Nimrod imprisoned all immortals in Sheol.
The Silence Law banning serenades which cause ripples and thus may alert the Sanguinary; primarily enforced by Nimrod.
Solitaire Member of a group of immortals who seek the unity of all Prides outside the Stratagem; profane.
Spill Release of immaculum which occurs at death.
Splintering Arrival of the Sanguinary from the crucible; its physical form broke into thousands of conundrum.
Stratagem System of counting coup through non-lethal means, in order to increase visage in and among the Prides.
Submerge To release control of the body to an avatar, generally by entering ennui.
Sunedrion Immaculate immortal tree, heart of a weald; its wood has properties of blocking taint, mending pattern damage, and expelling Sanguinary control.
Taboo Permanent change to an immortal, caused by religarum.
Taint Immaculum warped by misused serenade.
Tempest Surge of immaculum and allies from the crucible; unpredictable.
Terrene Form An Immortals human form.
Tier System of rank within a Pride, on a scale from 1 to 30 where thirty is the Paragon; corresponds to evolution toward Eidos.
Transcendent Being summoned from the crucible; most have become pride founders or paragons.
Triad Group of three Nimrod forming a hunting pack, usually with one gossamer.
True Name The distinct halo feel or ripple of an immortal, clearest when they are in Himsati form.
Tryst Offspring of a human and a natural madonna.
Twilights Mortal humans.
Unmen A manifestation of the Sanguinary; the Rime, the Dust, and currently the Silhouette.
Uplifting Ceremony of being brought into a Pride.
Visage Overall reputation and rank between Prides in the Stratagem.
Vogue Well-known attention.
Vox Conundrum in the throat which stores avatars, allows serenades, and ties together the conundrum in the body.
Warp Directing pure ally energy at an inanimate object; unpredictable.
Weald The forest surrounding a Sunedrion. Wealds are often perpetually one season.
