Serenades
This document gives a summary of the basic serenade system, followed by a summary of complications and variations for serenades. Finally it gives a very brief listing of all serenades. Future versions may also include slightly longer descriptions of the serenades themselves.
Serenade System
The Effect
Serenades (also called attentions) generally work the same way as other skills, but there a few additional complications only applicable to serenades. There are 3 requirements, the first is a VOX. All immortals have a VOX. Second is Free Immaculum. If all a character's FI is allocated to another halo the character may not play a serenade until at least 1 point is freed. Finally characters require some knowledge, in this case skill in the relevant attention. If the character does not have the attention (or its litany) a -5 penalty is applied (as usual for skills).
Playing a serenade takes a single action (aka Escapade). The base serenade roll is: Result = Free Immaculum + Rank bonus + D10. A roll of 0 is automatically a failure. See the section on Taint to see if the failure results in Taint.
Alice is using a serenade on Bob. She has 4 Free Immaculum currently, and knows the serenade at rank 2. She rolls a 6 on her roll, giving her a total of 12.
Resistance
If the serenade is targeted against a living being, the being will get a chance to resist. There are two types of resistance — active and passive. A target always knows that they are the target of a serenade, and will generally they will also know who is targeting them. Unless they know the attention, however, they normally do not know which serenade is being used.
Alice tells Bob she is about to heal his injury using the Nostrum serenade. Bob does not know that serenade himself. Alice begins the serenade, (actually Ember), unfortunately Bob knows Ember so the GM informs Bob's player that Alice is using Ember on him, and would he like to actively resist
Passive resistance is automatically applied, and is simply the target's appropriate halo colour (as described by the effect). No roll is required or allowed for the target, and this does not take an action.
Active resistance applies when the target attempts to play a counter-serenade to reduce or cancel the effect of the serenade. To be able to counter-serenade, the target must have at least 1 free immaculum currently in his halo, and must spend an action to do so. If the target does not have an action they may attempt it with an additional Multiple Defences (aka Parry) hostile (see combat).
The active resistance is the defender's appropriate halo colour, plus any bonus (or penalty) in the serenade plus a d10 roll. If the roll is a 0 (NULL) the target is treated as having a resistance of 0.
Bob decides being fried to a crisp would be a bad idea, so he decides to actively resist Alice's Ember. Additionally he'd rather not use an action to defend. He thus rolls a green Multiple Defences hostile and a red defence hostile. He rolls a 2 on the green die, making the Multiple Defenses roll with his green halo of 2. He then rolls a 2 for the defence roll, plus 2 for his red halo, and 1 for his one rank in Ember.
Results
To determine the final result, simply compare the attack to the resistance. If the attack is less than the resistance, it is a failure. Otherwise, for every three over the resistance provides one rank of result.
Alice's attack was 12, compared to Bob's 5. This results in a level 2 success (12 -5 = 7). Bob takes an impairing fire wound.
If you wish to retry after failing, the difficulty goes up by 3 on future attempts. Retrying a successful roll, or one with no significant effect (0-2 above the resistance) has no penalty.
Taint
A NULL on the primary hostile can result in Taint. If there was no active resistance, there is no penalty. Otherwise if the serenade was made in the Habitat it results in Taint. The amount of taint is equal to the square of the number of hostiles NULLed.
Taint makes a number of motes in the halo unusable. The halo with the highest rating is affected first. If there is a tie involving Free Immaculum it is affected first. Otherwise a colour is chosen at random.
A tainted mote is unusable until they are purified. The methods of purification are covered elsewhere, but the main forms are sinning, lullaby, and slaying other immortals. Additionally depending on the phase the moon, some motes may become available for use.
Complications
Litany
A litany is a training routine meant to focus the mind in preparation for using a particular serenade. A litany costs 6 memory points to buy.
Using a litany takes an action, and provides a +1 bonus to the appropriate serenade if used immediately afterwards. Additionally it can be used by a defender to give them +1 to their defense. Litanies also allow the user to avoid the -5 penalty for being untrained.
If the immortal uses a litany for one serenade, then uses a different a serenade they suffer a -3 penalty to the serenade as a result of their own confusion.
Masking
Occasionally an immortal may not want his target to know the exact serenade being played on them. If so they may attempt to mask the serenade being played. To do this they roll an additional mask hostile.
Alice, having somehow convinced Bob that this time she will heal him, starts to use the serenade Ember on Bob. Alice this time decides to mask the effect.
The difficulty of the roll is equal to the highest level effect you are willing to mask. So if you think you will only get a rank 1 result, you only need to make the roll at difficulty 3. You may, if you wish, limit the success of the serenade to your mask level.
The roll itself is based on the character's current free immaculum and adds the bonus in the Ornamentation Legacy.
Alice thinks the best result she'll get is a rank 3 effect. She thus rolls her mask roll at difficulty 9. She rolls a 7, and adds her FI (4), to give an 11. She has no ranks in Ornamentation so this does not modify her roll.
The GM then tells Bob he is being targeted by a serenade he does not know. Does he want to resist?
Although the target is not aware of which serenade is being used when asked if he wants to resist, if he actively resist he still gets to use any ranks in the serenade as a bonus (or -5 if he doesn't).
Hiding
Normally when an immortal is targeted by a serenade they are aware of who is attacking them and the attacker's approximate location if not visible. Obviously, there are times when the immortal using the serenade would prefer not to reveal their location or identity.
To do this, the player uses the Dark Page legacy, adding their Blue halo to the roll. The system is otherwise the same as masking, except that the target does not learn the source of the serenade. Combining Masking and Hiding is a particularly effective technique.
Trent attempts to cast Chaos on Alice, but does not wish to reveal his hiding spot behind the rose bushes. He decides he probably won't get more then a rank 4 success (12 over the resistance) success, so that is the target of his roll.
Multiple Targets
It is possible to have one serenade affect multiple targets. This is fairly simple, and requires no extra rolls. However for every target beyond the first everyones resistance is increased by 3 (if they are actively resisting), or 1 if they are passively resisting. The caster may choose the order of targets.
The level of the effect is determined individually for each target, or (if the caster wishes) may be limited to that of the least effective use.
Alice now tries to use Inroad on Bob, the recently discovered Trent and his brother George. She makes her attack roll as normal, getting a total result of 13. Trent decides to actively resist, while Bob and George are just using their passive resistance. As such everyone gets +2 to their resistance (0 for Trent [being the first], +1 for Bob, +1 for George). If Bob had chosen to actively resist everyone would get a +4 bonus (0,+3,+1).
Area Affects
Rather then affecting individual targets, the caster may instead choose to affect an area. In this case everyone's resistance is modified by the size of the area of affect. See the range, area of effect table for details.
Eve is attempting to hide herself, a motorcycle, seven short men, and her priceless collection of Fabergé eggs from a unknown masked man on a silver horse. She decides to use Veil to make them all invisible to the naked eye (resistance 3). All in all they occupy a 15m radius circle. This adds 5 to the resistance, resulting in a difficulty of 8.
Extended Range
Unless otherwise specified, most serenades line of sight range or so (No, the moon is not line of sight). To affect things a longer range the range, area of effect table is used.
Long range serenades like Come Hither ignore the first 15 ranks on the table (1 mile).
Trent decides to cast Marionette (telekinesis) on Perth (the city) to bring it a little closer for his trip to SwanCon. He is currently in Sydney. This is over 2500 miles. The GM tells Trent this is a resistance of 28 for the distance, plus another 24 for its area, and another 30 or so for its weight. Trent has 4 Free immaculum and knows Marionette to rank 2. Trent books a plane ticket.
Strength
All serenades have a strength associated with them. The more powerful the serenade the higher the strength. Serenade strength is used to determine how hard it is to extend or shorten a serenade, as well as over what distance it can be heard.
A serenades strength is equal to the resistance of the target of the serenade, plus 3 times its success rank. If the immortal using the serenade wishes the total modified roll can be used as it's strength.
Alice uses Bastion to boost her defenses. The resistance is a 4, and she achieves a rank 2 success. The serenades strength is thus a 10.
Extending or Quieting Serenades
Once a serenade has been started it is possible to extend or shorten it's duration. To extend a serenade an immortal uses their FI and Loop (to extend) or Tranquillity Legacy (to quieten/shorten). The resistance is the serenades strength. If the immortal lacks the attention being manipulated they suffer a -5 penalty, otherwise skill in the attention plays no part.
Each rank of success (ie for every 3 over the resistance) the duration is changed by rank (see table below). If the duration is dropped below rank 1 it expires immediately, otherwise no serenade can be lengthened beyond rank 5 (indefinite).
| Duration Rank | Serenade's Duration |
|---|---|
| 1 | Clash (or turn if extending) |
| 2 | Scene (or turn if quieting) |
| 3 | Episode |
| 4 | Series |
| 5 | Indefinite (Permanent?) |
Alice is using Talaria to fly to Perth. The GM tells Alice the normal duration of a scene will not be enough. Alice decides to extend the duration. The strength of the serenade is 15. Alice rolls a total of 18. This improves the duration by one rank to Episode. This is enough for Alice to glide to Perth.
Counter Serenades
Serenades can be countered to reduce their effectiveness. To do this the person wishing to counter a serenade rolls a d10 adding their FI plus skill in the attention (or -5 if unskilled). For every rank of success over the serenade's strength it reduces the strength and result of the serenade by one rank. If the serenade is reduced below aa rank 0 success, it terminates.
The target of a serenade suffers a -3 penalty to the roll.
Trent, jealous that Alice managed to avoid Sydney Airport's pointless security, decides to try and terminate her serenade. He rolls a d10, adds his FI and Talaria skill for a total of 18. This beats the serenades strength (15) by one rank. Alice's serenade strength is reduced by 3 to 12. Also this means her previous rank 2 success is now a rank 1 success. She begins to drift towards the ground. Trent decides to try again, and makes a second attempt. He rolls another total of 18. Alice's serenade is reduced by 6 - it terminates. Alice opens her parachute.
Variants
Melds (Working together)
It is possible for a group of immortals to work together to produce a larger effect. First one person must be chosen as the leader (the maestro). The maestro chooses the desired level of effect. This becomes the resistance for everyone else.
Now everyone (including the maestro), rolls against this resistance. Everyone that succeeds will add 1 to maestro's roll, and everyone who fails subtracts 1. A NULL causes taint to the one that failed, and will normally causes the serenade to fail.
Finally the maestro rolls again. If the maestro succeeds (at the target level), against the target resistance, including the meld bonus, the meld succeeds. If he rolls a NULL, everyone gets taint.
Chaos and Order: Warps
Immortals recognise that there are 3 universal forces which can be harnessed through the power of the VOX. These are known as the Allies: Ether (Creation), Abaddon (Destruction) and Orenda (Change). Although many attentions use these as part of the effect, they can be used without a attention, this is known as a Warp.
Note: Warps are hard to use, and have a high chance of failing. Don't be surprised if they don't work for you. Why do you think attentions exist?
Abaddon: To destroy something the only thing to consider is its hardness. The hardness of the object is doubled, and used as the resistance of the serenade. For everything 3 points above the target number, a larger wound is dealt. The roll uses the Maleficia Legacy as a bonus, and FI as the halo colour.
Mallory decides he wants to destroy a spiders web across his doorway. It has a hardness of 2. Mallory rolls a 6, adds his 3 in Maleficia, and 8 for his FI. This is a 17, from which he is subtracts 4 (the resistance) for a final total of 13. He does a Crippling wound to the web.
Ether: To create something the character works out what size and hardness the desired object has to determine the base difficulty. This is then doubled, and used as the resistance to the roll. The roll required is FI + Genesis Legacy + d10. This determines the success of the creation. Low results are frequently not what you want at all.
Mallory decides to try and create a baseball bat. The GM determines that this has a hardness of 7. Mallory rolls 7 on a d10, adds his 8 in FI. He has no skill in Genesis, so thus has a total 15. The GM informs Mallory that there is now a tree branch on the ground near him
Orenda: The force of change is the most unpredictable Ally. As usual the base difficulty is the object's hardness times 2. The proteus legacy provides a bonus to the roll (FI based).
Mallory attacks his stuffed penguin (hardness 3) in the hopes of transforming it into a cardboard box. He final roll is a 12, beating the resistance by 6. This is fairly good, so Mallory is now the owner of a plush cardboard box.
Cages
Cages are used for embedding serenades into objects, or delaying their effects. Full description later.
Lulls
A Lull is a way to prevent the use of a specific serenade. To set up a Lull the player rolls d10, adds clear immaculum, and talent rank in the appropriate serenade. Every 3 rolled adds +1 to any other attempts to use this attention. The duration is one clash (round), but can be extended.

Hardness
This table is used whenever the strength or durability of an item forms a part of its resistance to a serenade. Mundane items range from 1 (talc) to 15 (diamond). Many supernatural and mystech (mystical technology) items have hardnesses beyond this, up to 30. Conundrum, the essence of the Sanguinary, and immortal voxes have a hardness of 30, and are thus almost industructable.

Weight
This table gives the wright categories for objects. Note that an objects weight is equal to the number of light wound motes it has. This table also lists the higher wound ranks. Wright categories are added to the resistance when using serenades such as marionette or flight.
Note this table only lists the maximum for each value. An items weight category is the smallest category it can be.

List of Serenades
The list of serenades was taken from http://homer.bus.miami.edu/~aphillip, Immortal, Serenades.htm. Some modification has taken place, the contents still copyright the original author, and copied without permission.
Most serenades are complexity 5. Calling Vogues drops to 3 if you are the appropriate calling. Similarly the Vogues for prides cost 4 for pride members. Finally Secrets cost 6 — if you can get someone to teach you.
The vogues Metaphor and Selune are complexity 4 for everyone. Metaphor is a useful serenade for most characters. Selune allows you to do more damage (obviously essential for everyone...).
| Complexity 3 | Complexity 4 | Complexity 5 | Complexity 6 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rank | (Calling cost) | (Pride cost) | (Vogues cost) | (Secrets cost) |
| Rank 1 (Familiar) | 5 | 7 | 9 | 11 |
| Rank 2 (Trained) | +7 | +9 | +11 | +13 |
| Rank 3 (Pro) | +9 | +11 | +13 | +15 |
| Rank 4 (Master) | +11 | +13 | +15 | +17 |
| Rank 5 (Laureate) | +13 | +15 | +17 | +19 |
| Rank 6 (Virtuoso) | +23 | +25 | +27 | +29 |

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adagio | Slowing Opponents | Motion become slow ... | Anopholes, Dracul | 30 |
| This serenade removes extra actions in the target for a clash. The resistance is the opponents FI. For every rank of success the target loses one action, to a minimum of one. This serenade cannot be extended. | ||||
| Ahimsa | Summoning Animals | The wild things listen... | Anopholes, Dracul | 30 |
| Allure | Illusions | Mirages find root in your mind... | Morrigan, Tautha | 31 |

| Argus | Alarms | This thing become my eyes... | Keepers | 35 |
| Argus allows items to be used as a receptacle for an immortals senses. The resistance of Argus is based on the number of senses the character wishes to leaave behind (3 per sense), plus the area of effect desired (the first two feet are free). For each rank of success produces better fine tuning of the effect. Rank 1: Senses activate when a specifc person nears. Rank 2: Senses activate when anyone with harmful intent to the player nears (theft is 'harmful' in this sense). Rank 3: Senses ativate when a particular type of creature enters (Immortal, twilight, drov, bete noire). Rank 4: Senses activate when any sentient creature enters area. Rank 5: When any living thing or construct enters area. Once activated the serenade lasts a scene before it must be reativated. It is not uncommon for Keepers to have many active Arguses. | ||||
| Bare | Exposing the Invisible | The light conceals nothing... | Nimrod, Arachne | 36 |
| Bastion | Mystic Armor | The violet light embraces... | Arachne, Banjax | 36 |
| For every 3 above the targets violet halo, this serenade provides a +1 violet halo for resisting damage. The bonus can exceed the normal limits, but can only be used for resisting damage or serenades. It lasts a scene. | ||||
| Boon | Sharing Wounds | Chains of flesh and blood bind us... | Eremite, Morrigan | 37 |

| Cradle | Mental Links | Two minds intertwine... | Banjax, Peri | 46 |
| Cradle creates a telepathic link between 2+ individuals. If any member is in danger, the others receive flashs of the threat. The resistance is based on familiarity. The higher the result, the lesser danger will activate the serenade. It lasts until broken. | ||||
| Dare | Lowering Inhibitions | Break the chains that bind desires... | Anopholes, Roane | 46 |
| Daze | Supernatural Privacy | I am legend best forgotten... | Phoenix, Arachne | 47 |

| Diluenta | Body of Water | The anatomy flows... | Roane, Tautha | 48 |
| Dim | Extinguishing the Halo | Death wraps her cloak around me... | Banjax, Peri | 49 |
| Dims the halo so the target may appear dim, or invisible to drovers. Difficulty is highest halo, each point above this provides a resistance of 1 to see through the illusion. Dim lasts a scene. | ||||
| Domino | Deep Intuition and Disguise | Identity be buried behind the eyes... | Anopholes, Phoenix | 49 |
| Dowser | Seeking | Beware the light, it conceals nothing... | Dracul, Nimrod, Highbinder | 50 |
| Ember | Creating Fire | Heat upon heat, the soul to fire... | Peri, Phoenix | 51 |
| Ember allows the immortal to excite molecules in objects to cause them to burst into flame. The resistance is based on the Violet halo if the target is living. Otherwise it is based on it the objects natural flamibility (1: gas, oil ; 2: paper, wood; 3: rubber, plastics; 4: glass, thin metal ; 5: asbestos, water). Additionally if the target is damp or in a wet environment the resistance is increased. | ||||

| Iris | Another's Sight | All souls are but one eye... | Arachne, Terat | 68 |
Allows the user to see though another's eyes. The resistance is the
distance + the targets blue halo. For every rank of success the
user can see things event the target cannot. Rank 1 is normal
vision, rank 2 is low light, rank 3 sees in infrared and ultraviolet,
rank 4 is x-rayvision, while rank 5 allows vision of halos, Immaculum, taint and spirits. This may be used on oneself in which case the distance resistance is 0. |
||||
| Khemia | Alchemy | Kissed by the Philosopher's Stone | Peri, Roane | 68 |
| The Labyrinth | Dark Maze | The maze builds its walls of dark shadows... | Nimrod, Phoenix | 69 |
